Whilst Gambia is not a country that can rely upon miles and miles of sandy beaches, especially taking into account its title as the smallest country in Africa, the beaches it does have are every bit as spectacular as those found on the idyllic carribean islands. The Gambian coast, also known as the 'Smiling Coast', with its golden and white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and an environment full of spectacular wildlife and the palm trees typical of the area. Along the Gambian coast there are many tourist resorts, with a solid hotel and restaurant infrastructure present, with beach-side bars offering hammocks and shade where you can enjoy their spectacular array of freshly caught fish.
The most widely known beach in Gambia is Bijilo Beach, in the locality of Bijilo, towards the south of the River Gambia. With its golden sand, and a couple of small hotels and refreshment bars, its a peaceful, idyllic beach, making it the perfect place to lie back and relax!
Other beaches that need mentioning are Kololi Beach, and the beaches in Senegambia and Kairaba regions, other areas where you will find numerous hotels and restaurants.
On the other side we have the beaches of Kotu, slightly to the north of Bijilo and Senegambia. These beaches are situated close to deep waters, where it is advisable to exercise extreme caution to the strong currents in the area.
The beaches of Bakau, also known as Bajara Beach, is without doubt the most touristic destination Gambia has on show. With its impressive beaches, gorgeous cliff-edged coves, the natural environment will leave you amazed. On the other side you will also find the beaches of Cape Point, characterised by extensive beaches full of vegetation.
Moving away from the area surrounding the river mouth we find other beaches such as Tanji Beach and Batokunko Beach. These two isolated beaches are far away from the hustle and bustle of the large tourist resorts, where all you will find are small fishing villages. Paradise Beach is another destination worth pointing out, as the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing holiday in Gambia.
If you want to experience an incredible and unique atmosphere, in the south of the country you will find the beaches of Sayang, itself a small fishing village, with a definite maritime flavour. Its not unusual to find the typical small fishing boats settled on these sandy beaches, ready to sail into the sea to fish. This is certainly the place to visit if you want a true African experience in Gambia. |
