The Republic of Gambia is a country situated on the Atlantic coast of Africa, although only a small part of the country is actually found on the coast, with Senegal flanking the country on either side. Gambia has been independent since 1965, the year in which it gained its independence from the United Kingdom.
Little known, Gambia is actually the smallest country on the African continent, with its main geographical feature being the River Gambia which flows across the country from east to west flowing out into the Atlantic. Several towns and villages grew on the shores of the River Gambia, turning into the country's modern day cities, in what is a predominantly flat country with little mountainous area. Gambia enjoyed its golden era of tourism during the 1990's, but still today Gambia holds many treasures for tourists wishing to explore the country, although the improvement in the development of tourism in nearby Angola, Sierra Leone or Namibia (some of which had been in the midst of civil war towards the end of the 20th century), has led to a decline in Gambia's fortunes. However, Gambia is the ideal place to enjoy a fantastic holiday, whether it be travelling down the River Gambia, enjoying the nature on offer or exploring other magical locations in and around Gambia.
The cities such as Bakau, Serrekunde, Yunum or the capital Banjun demonstrate the potential Gambia has, with its extensive golden beaches on either side of the river estuary. Gambia's cities already have an extensive tourist infrastructure, with a plethora of hotels, apartments, hostels, houses and chalets to choose from when deciding upon your holiday accommodation.
In Gambia you will also find many leisure actvities on offer, from open-air sports such as hiking, golf, cycling or bird-watching to excursions along the River Gambia, one of the biggest in Africa. There is also, of course, the constant sunshine and warm temperatures that accompanies your every move!
Along the coast of Gambia you will find many restaurants and beach-side bars, to while away the time on your magical trip to Gambia, a paradise on the Atlantic coast of Africa. |
